This internship report discusses multipurpose simulation models for large-scale systems whereby special emphasis has been placed on mining simulation. The practical examples and concepts outlined within the report mostly derive from a mine simulation model developed for the Kennecott Corporation, Utah, USA in 1996–97. The chosen approaches are underpinned by analyzing multipurpose modeling concepts as well as modern concepts for large-scale systems. Additional topics describe the visualization and representation of simulated processes and the integration of continuous and discrete simulation approaches. Details of the mine project conclude the discussion.
